An artistic tribute to Shimomura Ryōnosuke at the Cernuschi Museum

From June 3 to October 12, 2025, the Cernuschi Museum – Museum of Asian Arts of the City of Paris – presents an exceptional exhibition dedicated to Shimomura Ryōnosuke, entitled The Painter and the Bird. It brings together works donated by the artist’s widow in 2014 and explores his unique relationship with birds, a central motif in his work.

A pioneer of Japan’s postwar avant-garde and co-founder of the Pan-Real Art Association, Shimomura broke away from traditional Nihonga to develop a visual language blending graphic stylization, geometry, and an innovative technique using paper pulp. His birds – whether poetic abstractions or fighting cocks – embody a distinctive vision, both spiritual and contemporary.

The museum offers a rotating presentation: the first phase, until July 20, focuses on conceptual reflection; from July 22, the emphasis shifts to the evolution of cock representations. Admission to the permanent collections is free. The exhibition is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. (last ticket sold at 5:30 p.m.).
